Starting on January 1, 2026, the prohibition of specific products containing intentionally added PFAS under Maine Public Law 2021, c. 477, An Act To Stop Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances Pollution will take effect. The enacted law has the objective to reduce PFAS pollution and therefore, protect Maine’s environment and natural resources.

Understanding PFAS

PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a group of synthetic chemicals (around 5,000 individual substances) that have been used in various industries since the 1940s. Their persistence in the environment has earned them the moniker "forever chemicals”. Especially the chemicals PFOS and PFOA, which belong to the PFAS group, have been classified as carcinogenic, are banned globally, and have made headlines in the past.

What is prohibited?

RATIONAL cooking accessories with TriLax coating contain some PFAS chemicals and is therefore directly affected by this prohibition. The RATIONAL TriLax coating does not contain any PFOA or PFOS and are therefore not harmful to health. According to the law, PFAS will no longer be permitted in 13 product categories. The ban affects, for example, cookware, cosmetics, and cleaning products. The Law interprets cookware to include items that have a food contact surface with a nonstick-PFAS-coating.

What are the next steps?

We are obligated to notify you that a person or company may not sell or distribute into the state of Maine the products listed on the next page. The use of TriLAX accessories already in use is not subject to any prohibitions. Their usage after January 1, 2026 is still permitted. All RATIONAL products are regularly tested and meet all current guidelines and high standards for food contact.

Is a replacement available?

Sustainability has been part of RATIONAL’s DNA for over 50 years. Resource-efficient products and their climate-friendly production are just as important to us as the use of environmentally friendly technologies. We are already proactively working on PFAS-free alternatives, and we are currently unable to offer any corresponding alternatives. Maine is the second state in the United States to enact a specific sales prohibition in this regard. Minnesota enacted a similar ban that went into effect January 1, 2025.

El Gobernador del Estado de California firmó la ley AB1200 el 5 de octubre de 2021, que añadió el Capítulo 15 (a partir de la Sección 109000) a la Parte 3 de la División 104 del Código de Salud y Seguridad de California.
