The Brass Taps Campus Pub, or “the Keg“ as it is commonly known, has been a gathering place for the University of Guelph community since 1974, serving up great food and beverages as well as catering and special events for students, university faculty and staff, alumni and their friends and family.
Neil Prince began working at the Brass Taps when he was a student earning his undergraduate degree at Guelph, and worked his way up from there. Today he is assistant manager of internal operations for University Centre Services and oversees kitchen operations at the Brass Taps.
The gourmet pub menu includes favourites like burgers and wings as well as specialty items like curries, personal pizzas, fish tacos, veggie samosas, local brisket cheesesteak sandwiches and poutine. There are daily specials as well as vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, and Prince buys ingredients from family-run local businesses whenever he can. They offer dine-in and takeout service as well as catering, and students are invited to linger and study at the pub’s themed lounge rooms.
The kitchen installed its first RATIONAL SelfCookingCenter® in 2012; today there are three. Prince plans to add additional RATIONAL units as he expands the pub’s food and catering across the 28,000-student campus in the future.
Prince and his team had several reasons for choosing RATIONAL: they wanted to replace single-function equipment, improve overall food quality, and cut costs while increasing ROI. With RATIONAL, they were able to accomplish all three.
