Friendship Inn Saskatoon: Feeding Hope with RATIONAL Technology.

For over 56 years, the Friendship Inn in Saskatoon has been a vital lifeline for the community, serving hot meals to those facing food insecurity. Under the leadership of CEO Sandra Kary, the Inn has grown into a bustling hub of compassion, preparing over 450,000 meals annually, a volume that rivals many commercial kitchens.

“Our vision is a community without hunger,” Sandra explains. “Every day, we process around 2,000 pounds of donated food to prepare meals for those in need. It’s a very busy place—we’re the community’s kitchen and dining table.”

To meet this growing demand, the Inn turned to RATIONAL. Chef Janet von Reynolds remembers the moment their first iCombi Pro arrived. The team affectionately nicknamed it “the Lamborghini”. Before RATIONAL, the kitchen relied on aging ovens that couldn’t keep up with the pace and quality required. Meals were delayed and sometimes food was wasted.

With five RATIONAL units now in operation, the kitchen has transformed into a high-efficiency production line capable of serving up to 1,800 meals on busy days. The technology not only improved consistency and speed but also empowered the team to take on more ambitious goals.

“Big day was 500 meals... Since RATIONAL, we are averaging over 1,400 meals—and on busy days, It’s like 1,800 meals.“

Looking ahead, the Inn’s management team is planning for the future, with aspirations to serve one million meals. Thanks to RATIONAL, they won’t need to expand their kitchen footprint significantly. The equipment’s efficiency and versatility are helping them scale sustainably, without compromising quality or care.
